New to Yoga ?

If you're brand new to yoga, or have never taken a studio class before, not knowing what to expect when you walk in the door, may have you feeling just a little bit nervous.

The good news is, we're really friendly , and you only have to take your 'first-ever', yoga class once. So take a deep breath and Relax...., we're here to help guide you every step of the way !






So what is yoga ?

While seemingly a simple question, Yoga is many different things to different people. In fact, if you asked 100 people what yoga is, you’d likely get 100 different answers. That is part of the beauty of yoga – it is a personal practice, and it's meaning comes from you !




I've heard that there are different kinds of Yoga. Do you specialize in a specific "type" ?

While Calgary's Yoga Studio Sarana offers several different "varieties" of yoga, we specialize in Iyengar Yoga, ( where props, such as belts, blocks, and blankets are used as aids in performing "asanas" or "postures"). The props enable students to perform the asanas correctly, thus minimizing the risk of injury and strain, and make the postures accessible to everyone.




Do you offer Beginner classes ?

Absolutely ! For those who are "truly new", and looking for a more gradual, in-depth introduction ( with similar newcomers ), we are very pleased to offer our "Introduction to Yoga" workshop with Lynne Swenson. This monthly, two-hour, registered event is perfect for people brand new to the practice of yoga. It introduces basic alignments, the use of props, and illustrates why Yoga is ideally suited to people of all ages and abilities. Completion of the workshop will all but guarantee your confidence in tackling any of our Level 1 classes.




Do I have to be skinny and flexible to do yoga ?

Not at all ! Anyone can do yoga. Size, shape, physical health, fitness level, age… none of these things matter when it comes to yoga. Yoga is about self-acceptance and working with your body, no matter its' size. In every yoga class you go only as far as you wish, as increased flexibility is a benefit of yoga, not a prerequisite.




What if I have an injury...should I wait until I'm better ?

Nuh-uh! While we recommend that you inform your instructor of your injury, prior to class, hopping on your mat and re-connecting with your body is a great idea ! In fact, we offer therapeutic and restorative classes geared specifically toward helping people with injuries, with the goal of gaining increased flexibility, mobility and strength. What should I wear ? Do I need special clothes ?

Nope! All you need is something you can move freely in. It can be pants, or shorts, a t-shirt or a tank. No special shoes are required because yoga is done barefoot. Clean comfy clothes, a towel, a mat, and if you wish, a bottle of water is all you need.



What if I'm a teen, how old do I have to be to practice at Calgary's Yoga Studio Sarana ?

If you're new to our studio, and are under 18, please bring a parent or guardian with you on your first visit so they can sign a waiver. 15 - 18 year olds can practice without a parent present after the waiver has been signed. If you're between 10 - 15 years old, you can still practice with us, but a parent or guardian will need to be present.




OK.....This all sounds really great ! Are there any other rules I should follow ?

While every Yoga Studio is different, much of what you need to know regarding yoga studio "etiquette", was probably already learned in kindergarten !
