    Restorative Yoga
    with Vandana Vora

    This is a delicious Restorative Yoga. Its purpose is to calm the nervous system, reduce blood pressure, release tension and "GRIP" in your back, hips, neck, shoulders and spine. 

    Restorative Yoga has been researched and proven to be a successful and blissful method of assisting in tapping the body's own natural healing power.

    Why Progressive?
    Each 8-week session has been carefully planned.
    - Learn the basics and set a foundation for yourself, with focus on breathing, progressive muscular guided relaxation.

    - Each Restorative Yoga 8-week session will focus on low back pain, neck and shoulder issues, breathing difficulties, anxiety, depression, lymphatic health and drainage, and heart health... infused with simple healing breathing practices.
    - Finally progressively stay longer in a Restorative pose in silence soaking in your body's own natural healing power. During these periods of deep relaxation, you will feel nurtured from within.
    - Pick up your mat and head to the Studio. Vandana Vora will welcome you. Namaste

    Yogic Sleep (Yoga Nidra)
    with Vandana Vora


    Yogic Sleep ( Yoga Nidra) or sleep with awareness, is an ancient practice that is rapidly gaining popularity in the West. Rod Stryker says, " We live in a chronically exhausted, overstimilated world." Yogic sleep is a systematic method of inducing complete body,breathe and mind relaxation. The practitioner begins by quieting the overactive conscious mind, then moves into a meditative state, gradually finding a state of " stillness and silence," in which the brain wave slows down, emerge feeling rejuvenated. This class begins with gentle stretches, followed by progressive Yogic sleep in fully supported Savasana with Vandana Vora's voice blending with the sound of Tibetan healing bowl.     New student will learn the foundational principles of the Yoga poses. 

    Topics include the importance of alignment and the use of props.

    Pranayama workshop with Samantha Lloyd

    B.K.S. Iyengar says Pranayama is the extension and expansion of all our vital energy, not just the breath. "Prana is special because it carries awareness. It is the vehicle of consciousness." 

    The study of Pranayama is the gateway to a deeper understanding of ourselves and our inward journey.

     

    Teaching from the basic understanding that pranayama starts with a deep understanding and connection to savasana, this 3-hour workshop is ideal for anyone with an asana practice that wants to learn about or deepen their experience of pranayama.

    Happy Valentine's Day to all Yogis.  February is the heart month, and Yoga is a great way to rejuvenate, recharge and open our heart. 

    Guruji BKS Iyengar regarded Restorative Yoga as one of  essential components of  the balanced Yoga practice and all Yogis are encouraged to do at least one restorative session a week.

    Practising Restorative Yoga balances a fast lifestyle and has an enormous capacity to heal physical and mental symptoms that are stress related - and as we know, many diseases these days are stress related.

    Remember how you feel when you've been on vacation for awhile and you've had time to unwind and let go of the fast pace of life?

    Remember that feeling of being truly relaxed? Feeling so at ease in your skin that you hardly notice your physical body?

    The true meaning of Yoga is to experience union. To unite the mind and the body.

    Restorative Yoga allows you to take a vacation from daily pressures, unwind, and feel renewed, refreshed, and at peace with what is. We would like to thank Sherry Norman and Vandana Vora  for guiding the Yogis in the fine art of Restorative yoga.


     

    Besides Yoga, dark chocolate is also a great supporter of heart health.  Yoga studio south is home of some of yummiest chocolates from Ruth's hand made Peanut butter cups to brands like Giddy YoYo.


     

    In a study of 470 elderly men, cocoa was found to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death by a whopping 50% over a 15 year period .

    Another study revealed that eating chocolate 2 or more times per week lowered the risk of having calcified plaque in the arteries by 32%. Eating chocolate less frequently had no effect.

    Major Workshop with Marlene Mawhinney

    Yoga Studio South is excited
     to welcome Marlene Mawhinney in April.

    Marlene Mawhinney been practicing yoga since 1969 and teaching Iyengar Yoga for over forty years. Marlene holds a Senior Intermediate III Teaching certificate from the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute in Pune. In addition to training new teachers, and teaching classes and workshops in Toronto and abroad, she is internationally recognized for her research and expertise in yoga for people with health challenges. Marlene instructs both students and teachers in training in many Special Needs, Special Practices, Back Care, and Cardiac classes. She is also currently completing studies on the effect of Iyengar in the treatment of severe shoulder injury, and on the effect of Iyengar Yoga the case of severe chronic migraine.

     Requires at least one year of Iyengar Yoga experience.
